Aftab Shivdasani made his debut in the 1999 release ‘Mast’ alongside Urmila Matondkar. But even before that, he appeared as a child actor in many films, including the cult classic ‘Mr India’. Aftab then made several films in the early 2000s such as ‘Masti’, ‘Awara Paagal Deewana’, ‘Hungama’ and many more. It made a place for itself in the multi-starrer comedy genre. Despite making so many movies and being part of the industry for so many years, Aftab never chose to stay in a production house or be part of a certain “camp” in Bollywood.

In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Aftab recalled his long career and also talked about wearing a new hat, about becoming a producer with his wife Nin Dusanj. When asked to share his thoughts on camps and groups in Bollywood, Aftab said: “This group was called camping in the early 2000s, where people said it belonged to YRF, Bhatt or other camps. I was never subject to this as I always worked with a wide spectrum of producers and was friendly to everyone but never close. So, whenever they had a role and called me, I would go meet them. I made 9 movies with Vikram Bhatt, 5 or 6 movies with RGV but I was never part of their camps. It’s basically how you behave and I’ve been kind to everyone. Karan (Johar) is even a distant relative of mine, but I have never been close to anyone. I have been civil, kind and friendly to everyone and therefore I have no enemies. Therefore, I have never consciously gone to a camp or group, so I have stayed away from the peripheries of this group-versus-camping ideology. ”

Speaking about the kinds of roles he said no at the best time in his career, Aftab added: “I have turned down many movies and roles. It is like when you are offered a secondary role as a third or fourth protagonist, then I would not have become a main actor. That is what I have never understood, but I have people who have also offered me such roles. I feel like I have the right to say no to something I didn’t want to do. So I politely declined the offers as the ego plays an important role here. If I just reject it like that, that person will obviously think of me having a perception of being the lead actor. ”
