A former senior reporter for the New York Times has come under fire for an ugly attack on Melania Trump – saying he was “angry” that the first lady was a “foreigner” who “had the embarrassment of the Rose Garden” to destroy. “
Kurt Eichenwald – who spent two decades with the Green Lady – was ripped off for a series of tweets in apparent fury at the Slovenian – born first lady’s proud display of the newly renovated White House Rose Garden.
“It’s a destruction of our history, something that no other First Lady had the gall to do,” said the now best-selling author who was twice a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
“This is the first time I was afraid that @FLOTUS is a foreigner. She has no right to break our history. ” he said.
The 59-year-old journalist followed it up with a second attack on her immigrant status in an apparently now deleted tweet saved by Fox News.
“I still find it unbelievable that @FLOTUS, who has only been a citizen since the middle of GW Bush’s second term, had the madness to destroy the Rose Garden, to tell a life-long story. is, “he wrote.
“These pitiful, evil, dumb people must come out of our house. What GALL she has. ”
Eichenwald stood for immediate backlash for the tweets – including by other high-profile journalists.
“This is a terrible anti-immigrant take, Kurt, and you have to delete it and apologize,” replied Mehdi Hasan, a columnist with The Intercept and a host on Al Jazeera.
‘Call Melania terrible, fine. Call her a hypocrite, fine. But do not question their unnaturalized citizenship, or suggest that immigrants have second class as inferior civil rights to the rest of the citizenry, ” he warned.
“That is completely wrong and a dangerous path to go down, sorry.”
CNN Anchor Jake Tapper agreed. “This is xenophobic and wrong. It’s bigotry, ”he replied to Eichenwald.
A spokeswoman for Melania Trump, who has been a U.S. citizen since 2006, did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.
