The former CEO of McDonald’s strikes back at the fast food chain, submitting court documents Friday that the company’s case is being thrown against him. Steve Easterbrook was fired last year for having an unusual relationship with an employee, and now McDonald’s is trying to recoup some of the millions paid to Easterbrook, claiming that it was just discovered that he was also entering into relationships with other employees. In its submission, Easterbrook says that is not true, and that the company had all the relevant information about its relationships with subordinates when negotiating its divorce agreement, Bloomberg reports. McDonald’s says it stands by his complaint.
“McDonald’s – a sophisticated entity represented by a number of internal and external experts when concluding the severance agreement – is aware that it can not promote confidentiality of a breach of contract,” Easterbrook’s attorneys said in the submission. “Instead, try to do it wrong to make claims for a breach of fiduciary duty or fraud.” At Crain’s Chicago Business, Joe Cahill alleges that McDonald’s abused Easterbrook’s sister. “Managers missed an opportunity last fall to take a uniform stand on behalf of shareholders and employees,” he writes.
