“This issue is not an incident,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the floor of the House said today in a scorching response to being addressed and insulted with profanity by Republican Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida this week. “It’s cultural,” added the Democrat for New York’s 14th congressional district, drawing strong reaction from Hollywood, former presidential contenders and others.
In his 10-minute remarks on Thursday, the savvy progressive policy known to many simply as the AOC targeted Yoho’s behavior and his no apology on Wednesday as “accepting violent and violent language against women, a whole power structure that supports that. . “
Followed by strong support from fellow Democrats, the speech that attacks a sexist and toxic culture in the corridors of power and elsewhere struck a chord in cable news and social media:

If Luna turns out to be half the woman as Alexandria, I will have won. I can’t believe we’re lucky to have her in that room. https://t.co/QbT3V96AA1

I am so sick of men using their daughters as evidence of their empathy for women. I don’t care if you have a daughter or a pet turtle. You shouldn’t need to raise a woman to know that they don’t disrespect us. This speech is fierce and true. Get up for @AOC 🙌 https://t.co/zpkwP7NRV6

Accompanied by a fellow Republican, Yoho, who will soon be retiring, confronted Ocasio-Cortez on the steps of the Capital on July 21. The Republican conservative criticized the congresswoman as “disgusting” and proclaimed that “you are out of your head” because of the AOC’s claim that reports of rising crime rates during the COVID-19 pandemic are related to the subsequent economic crisis. After Ocasio-Cortez called Yoho rude for such an exhibition and entered the building, Sunshine State congressmen referred to her as “f ** king b *** h,” according to journalists and others within earshot.
On Wednesday, a clearly repentant Yoho spoke on the floor of the Chamber and, despite numerous witnesses to the incident, claimed that he never used “offensive insults, words that the press attributed to me.” The congressman also said that he was “very knowledgeable” of his language because he was a wife and two daughters.
Those most despicable words rejected the thick-skinned AOC to shine even brighter on what had happened and was perpetuating itself.
“Sir. Yoho mentioned that he has a wife and two daughters,” he said today of Yoho’s comments on Wednesday. “I am two years younger than Mr. Yoho’s youngest daughter,” added the Bronx congresswoman. “I am also the daughter from someone. My father, fortunately, is not alive to see how Mr. Yoho treated his daughter. My mother saw Mr. Yoho’s disrespect on the floor of this House towards me on television and I am here because I have to show my parents that I am their daughter and that I was not raised to accept the abuse of men. “
“When you do that to any woman, what Mr. Yoho did was give other men permission to do that to their daughters. By using that language, in front of the press, he gave permission to use that language against his wife, his daughters, the women of his community, and I am here to defend myself and say that this is not acceptable. “

Sexism permeates our culture, and members of Congress are not immune.
Thank you @AOC for that powerful speech and for talking about the abusive behavior that women and girls suffer across the country every day. We cannot be silent. https://t.co/w50EzkYE6M

Do you want to feel pride and admiration for a stranger? Set aside 9 minutes and 51 seconds and watch. Making sure my daughters see him tomorrow (if they admit I’m in the room).
Innate grace, intellectual ferocity, and the heart of a lioness. She is the anti-Trump. @ AOC https://t.co/AMbxwPf33G– Jason Isaacs (@jasonsfolly) July 23, 2020

A lot is happening, but there is a reason why @ AOC’s speech today on the floor of the House is echoing. She says what has not been said for too long. Silence is not an option. The time has come to consider misogyny and harassment, in Congress and at home.

On the other hand, as bullies often do, Ted Yoho was silent on Thursday. All he did was post a message about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech in China on Thursday at the Richard M. Nixon Library in California
Great speech by @SecPompeo on the need to confront #China as a united front with our allies. We are not seeking conflict and I pray that the people of China will put their country on a better path, but until the #CCP changes their behavior, we must #DistrustButVerify. https://t.co/wprsrE9z5M
