Even driving car lane? They come to an autonomous corridor in Michigan

Jobs with self-driving cars only? Maybe that’s in our future.

A future highway between Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan, will be home to highways that will be exclusively marked for self-driving cars in the future.

State and private partner Cavnue announced Thursday the formation of a new public-private duo to build the first kind of autonomous highway in Southeast Michigan to help speed up the test. Ultimately, the ultimate goal is to close “long holes” for access to transportation in the area.

Although the routes will initially be a test bed for autonomous cars, the state and Cavnue want the project to be future-proof. As self-driving cars get worse, the routes can be adapted to welcome different types of cars, such as large freight carriers and more. Cavnue initially saw smaller mover-type vans for these routes, but the project has already attracted other big names.

Ford, General Motors, Waymo, Argo AI, Toyota, Honda, TuSimple, BMW and more have all signaled support for this public-private project. Each will partner with Cavnue to develop an advisory committee to set neutral standards for the implementation of the corridor so that no OEM or company benefits more than the other.

This is a far-reaching project that we probably will not materialize for years. Phase one will focus on testing and road designs for these routes and should last two years. Construction will be part of “future phases” to determine after next phase one. Cavnue confirmed with Roadshow these routes will only be used for autonomous cars without traditional traffic allowed. A view of Cavnue shows the routes as surrounded by “standard traffic” and shows what the future of highways could look like.

When we see Cavnue’s autonomous highways come to life, they will also connect “opportunity zones”. Michigan Highlights to Focus on Small Business, Detroit Airport, Other Communities, Academic Centers and more – chief among them is Ford’s upcoming mobility hub at Michigan Central Station.
