Google Assistant has long dominated the field of voice assistant, despite a great advantage from Apple’s Siri. With the new iOS 14 release, Apple tried to bridge that gap a bit with a lot of improvements on Siri, but it’s clear that even with that, Google Assistant still has the upper hand.
Our colleagues in 9to5Mac have a full breakdown of everything that’s new with iOS 14, including what’s new from Siri. Visually, the biggest change to Siri in iOS 14 is the new compact user interface. Personally, I’m not a fan of looks, but it’s a good thing Siri no longer takes over its entire screen.
However, Apple also mentioned that Siri in iOS 14 had made some behind-the-scenes improvements that allow the voice assistant to answer more types of questions directly and get more information from the Internet. However, that is not achieved by the Google Assistant. In a video In-depth technical reviews pits the new Pixel 4 Google Assistant (on Android 11) against Siri on iOS 14. The result? Google still achieves victory.
The two most important areas this comparison takes into account are general commands and context drawn from what’s on the screen. Spoiler: The wizard wins both.
When it comes to general usage, Siri and Google Assistant are on par in many areas, but some commands just work faster or best in assistant. However, as for getting away from what’s happening on the screen, the Assistant essentially destroys the competition. Siri just isn’t good in context.
However, one area in which Siri has a considerable advantage is how interactive it is. The Google Assistant often performs the task and then stops, where Siri can sometimes offer more information directly from the voice assistant user interface. However, this comes down to personal preference.
