After the teasing, ZTE officially launched the Axon 20 5G with the first commercially available under-screen selfie camera technology.
While Oppo first showed us some concept devices with under-display camera technology, ZTE has beaten its rivals with the Axon 20 5G. It’s a reasonably solid mid-range smartphone without that new tech included as well.
At 6.92 inches in size, the Axon 20 5G packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, 6 or 8 GB of RAM, 128 or 256 GB of microSD expandable storage, and a 4220 mAh battery with 30 W charging support. It is eerily similar to the one on the OnePlus Nord launched last month.
Of course, the only selling point here is the under-display selfie camera. While ZTE is happy to promote the Axon 20 5G technology, we’re not really sure how it works in the “real world.” Press renders show a perfect, bezel-less FHD + OLED display, but we haven’t seen any tangible evidence of the selfie camera in action yet.
The “standard” cameras on the rear come in a four-camera array consisting of a 64-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide depth sensor, 2-megapixel macro, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Now the hidden camera on the screen has a power of 32 megapixels. We are really intrigued as to how clear and clean selfies will look when taken with the ZTE Axon 20 5G.
Another notable inclusion is that of an in-display fingerprint sensor, which gives you almost no external physical hardware to fail. Just pray that the screen doesn’t turn off at any point otherwise you will get stuck. Pricing is scheduled to start at RMB2,198 with the device available in purple, black, gray, and rose gold.
