Microsoft announced most of the details about its next-gen Xbox consoles a few weeks ago. While pre-orders are now available for consoles, no one has officially received a physical unit yet. However, Microsoft has submitted non-functional prototypes to popular tech YouTubers who review such products. Like any other tech product, it is a marketing strategy to help people decide which product to buy.
Marques Brownlee is a famous tech review YouTuber. He recently got his hands on the Xbox Series X and S Series models. Since the consoles did not have computer hardware, he revised the design.
Xbox Series X
The X Series is the flagship model and will retail for $ 499. The console comes in a matte black finish and looks like a plain, plain cuboid. It can be placed both horizontally and vertically, as it has protrusions for it. However, the main ventilation fan is placed at the top. The grill that covers the top is also black with a hint of green. Although the highlight looks like lighting, it’s actually painting.
On the front is the Xbox logo, which doubles as the power button. Additionally, there is a disk drive and its eject button, a USB port for the controller, and the connect button for wireless controllers.
The back of the console has 2 USB ports, an ethernet port, an HDMI port, and a memory expansion slot. It also has a few more vents for ventilation.
Xbox Series S
The S Series is a much smaller device and has been dubbed the smallest Xbox ever. The console, which will retail for $ 399, comes in a matte white finish with a black circular air vent on the front. It is thinner than the X Series and lacks the optical drive.
Users can position the console both horizontally and vertically, as the device has protrusions for it. However, it is recommended that users place it horizontally as placing it vertically would cover one of the vents.
At the front, the S Series only has the circular air vent, while it features the power button on the side, again like the Xbox logo. It also has a USB port and a connect button for wired and wireless controllers.
On the back, the S Series has outputs similar to the X Series. It has 2 USB ports, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, a memory expansion slot, and a small air vent.
Comparison
While both models look simple and could fit in with most interior designs, Marques thinks the S Series looks like “elegant and modern. ” He further commented, “People don’t want an alien spaceship.“
Aside from the design, Marques also has doubts about Microsoft’s market strategy and believes the extra two hundred dollars are worth investing in the performance enhancement that the X Series has to offer.
