YouTube is testing a new clipping tool that allows users to make short, shareable clips from live streams and long-form videos. Currently in limited alpha, only a few channels have the feature enabled.
“We have heard many comments from creators and viewers who wanted an easy way to capture short segments of content and share moments from videos or broadcasts,” according to a YouTube blog announcement. “We are excited to begin testing a clipping feature on YouTube … with a small group of creators as we begin collecting feedback.”
Clips on YouTube allows you to select five- to 60-second segments of a creator’s content to share across platforms. Just look for the scissors icon below the video of the participating channels and tap to open an edit box. Add the required title, then drag the blue square to your preferred section, click and pull the timeline, or enter the exact timestamps.
Once you’re happy with your selection, trim and share the clip, which will loop directly from the original video view page. The feature is currently available only on desktop and Android devices, though iOS accessibility is coming soon.

Twitch introduced a similar capability in 2016, allowing users to take quick snapshots of others’ streams. When tapping the Clips button, Twitch should save the previous 25 seconds of what you are watching, as well as the next five seconds.
