2020 has been a strange year to say the least, but that hasn’t stopped companies from launching new smartphones. In fact, we’ve seen almost no change in annual smartphone launch cycles, aside from companies now presenting their devices online rather than at major events.
We wanted to know how many of you were buying phones this year, so we asked you that very question last week. It seems that Android Authority readers are quite divided on this case.
Do you have or plan to buy a phone this year?
Results
Out of more than 3,600 total votes, almost 43% of Android Authority Readers plan to buy a smartphone sometime this year. Many commentators (see below) are waiting for the Pixel 5 to launch in October or for the Pixel 4a to arrive in their country.
23.26% of voters said they do not plan to buy a phone in 2020, while 18.21% said they have already purchased a phone. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and iPhone SE seem to be the popular picks of the year.
For those who keep track, that means more than 61% of the voters in this poll have already bought or are planning to buy a smartphone this year.
Only 15.54% said they are still undecided about whether or not they will buy a phone in 2020.
This is what you had to say
Here are some of the best comments from last week’s poll that explain why they voted the way they did:
- NorthernOil: I bought the Note 20 Ultra. The 12GB of RAM is important. Many applications can be opened, etc. at the same time, and what was slow to open the YouTube music app on my Note 8 opens immediately on my 20 Ultra.
- Gordon Hay: I’m on the waiting list for a Pixel 4a, which won’t be shipping to the UK until October, to replace my Pixel 2 as it won’t be getting any more updates after this fall. Continuous updates, vanilla Android, and price are my top deciding factors in a phone.
- roaduardo: I’ve already been through 5 phones this calendar year. I have a problem. But I stop now. I’m on this Note 20 Ultra. My last phone in a few years. I promise.
- Daryl Van Humbeck: I will not buy a new phone this year, because I bought one last year and I will not finish paying for it until next year. We’ll see if something I like more appears at that time. However, you still have to be able to run Minecraft Earth …
- Kim Kim: Well, I already bought one. But it is not a smartphone. It is a feature phone (flip phone). I want to go back to simpler times even for a moment.
- Flav79 – I plan to keep my Note 9 for at least one more year.
- Anon # 3999: I bought the iPhone SE in June, swapped it out for the S20 a few days ago, and I plan on swapping my Pixel 4 for the Pixel 5 when that happens. Three.
- Daniel Young: This will be the first year since I bought my Galaxy Nexus that I have not bought on day 1 of the last Google phone. I just can’t go back to a fingerprint reader on the back and a smaller screen. Why should all the new Pixels be mid-tier phones this year? I’m on the list to reserve the Fold 2. I’ll keep my 4XL just in case. At that price, I’m really going to have to love the Fold 2.
- Gamma M: I’m looking forward to October. Be it pixel 5 or a low-end iPhone 12.
- Corndog: I have a Pixel 4XL and would have been interested in the Pixel 5, but no XL models, the hole-punch camera, and the medium specs put me off. I’ll wait and see what the 6 looks like.
That’s it for this week. As always, thanks for voting, thanks for the comments, and don’t forget to let us know what you think of the results below.
