The Wristcam adds cameras to your Apple Watch.

Unlike other smartwatches like Samsung’s Original Galaxy Gear from 2013, the Apple Watch never had a camera on its strap. While most companies have since abandoned the idea of a watch camera, a new accessory seems to fill the gap for those with an Apple wearable who have been craving more cameras in their lives.

Called Wristcam, from a California-based company of the same name, the new $ 299 accessory is a strap for the Apple Watch that adds two cameras via an included modular accessory. The first lens is an 8-megapixel “world-facing” shooter, while atop the watch face is a 2-megapixel self-facing camera, which can capture photos or videos.

Videos can be captured in HD resolution up to 1080p, with the device having 8GB of local storage for 2,000 photos or one hour of video. What you shoot can be transferred to your iPhone’s Photos app via Wi-Fi (the device uses Bluetooth to connect to the Apple Watch). Live streaming is touted as an option on the Wristcam website, but since Apple doesn’t allow FaceTime video calls from the Apple Watch, it’s unclear which apps or services will work with that feature.

The cameras are waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes and charge via a “magnetic” USB cable. On its website, Wristcam says that “it will take 3 hours to fully charge the device, allowing you to capture hundreds of photos or approximately 30 minutes of video per charge.”

To protect privacy, the company has placed LED lights next to each lens, which continue to show that the cameras are in use. There is also a dedicated microphone for recording sound, as well as an outward-facing button under the camera for pairing the device and capturing photos and videos.

Series 1-6 Apple Watches are supported, as are the four watch size variations (38/40 mm and 42/44 mm). While it’s far from the svelte design of the Apple Watch, the company lists a variety of different color options for the bands, including the option to buy additional colors for $ 49 per band.

Wristcam says its December inventory was out of stock, but will ship new orders in January.
