Xiaomi announced a remarkable new air charging technology a week ago, and this week it is the turn of a world first display. In recent months, some phone makers have ditched curved-edge screens to go back to a flat screen, like the iPhone 12 family and Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21 +.
But Xiaomi has gone the other way. His new prototype has a screen that falls down the sides of the phone. And not just the long sides, but the short ones too.
Check out the video below to see this clearly, but the effect is quite amazing. Screens like this are called waterfall screens, so don’t be surprised that there are many videos showing waves and water cascading over the edges.
As you will see, the corners of the phone and a small strip around the edges are the only parts of the front and sides that are not covered by a screen.
Xiaomi describes it as a concept, but it can be more than that. A representative told The Verge that it already exists and they have used it, stating that it could be here sooner rather than later.
On its blog, Xiaomi says that what it describes as an 88-degree “hyper square display” has “virtually broken the technological limits of glass production.” Be that as it may, there can be problems with a screen like this.
First, there is the Cornish pasta problem. Workers in the tin mines in Cornwall, England, in the 19th century, ate patties, that is, cakes with meat filling inside.
Fundamentally, there was a sizable, easy-to-grip wavy crust around one side, so the miners could hold the paste by the crust to get to the meat and toss the morsel they had been holding in their fingers covered in toxic particles from the mine. . .
In other words, you need something you can hold onto, so we have to hope that Xiaomi has built a reject system on the sides so that it doesn’t react madly when you pick up the phone by the edges.
This problem already exists on phones where the screen slides on the sides.
Then there’s the off-axis issue that OLED displays also support today, where the curved edges look different from the main display, which can be unsettling to watch.
Still, there are other cool features on this phone. As you can imagine, with all that screen, there isn’t much room for anything else. So this is a phone with no ports, not even for charging. It will only use wireless charging.
And the front camera will be positioned under the screen, so there won’t be any visible interruptions for that, nor will the fingerprint sensor. Presumably something similar will be used for the power button. Or maybe he won’t have one of those either?
In general, it seems a curious but very striking phone. Let’s hope it materializes.
