The variants
Each console will release two variants. While Sony has opted for the PS5 disc and digital edition, Microsoft has opted for a less orthodox path. Sony PS5 consoles are identical except for a Blu-ray drive in the more expensive variety. There is no difference in size and performance between the two.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has two completely different versions. The main version is called Xbox Series X, and the cheapest one is called Xbox Series S. While Series X is its sports disc, high-end 4K that delivers Behemoth, Series S is a small digital-only box that will deliver a 1440p then. gen gaming experience. It is available at a significantly lower price compared to the other consoles. A lower price entry point gives Xbox a huge advantage, especially in such uncertain times. Performance wise, judging solely by the specs, the Xbox Series X appears to have a slight advantage over the PS5. Of course, any difference in the real world will only be seen once the console is released.
PS5
However, in the end, what will really matter is the games. PlayStation will apparently follow their tried and tested PlayStation Plus model, where they offer you two games and you have to pay an annual subscription to play multiplayer online. Xbox has gone the other way, giving users access to a ton of games and exclusives right out of the box with the Xbox Game Pass.
With the recent announcement of the EA merger, we will see major titles like FIFA and Star Wars available on the Xbox subscription platform. This is a great deal at around Rs 699 a month for the ultimate pass.
When it comes to exclusives, Xbox again has an edge here, with more exclusive releases in the first year. Compare that to the PS5, where most of its exclusives will also be available on the PS4 for the first year.
As for availability and pricing, not much has been revealed for India when it comes to the PS5. In fact, we’re not even in the first or may even be in the second round of console releases. Indian prices have not been disclosed either, although pre-orders have already started. While Xbox Series X will be available near the international release date at R49,990, but there is no official Indian release date for the S Series, which will sell for R34,990 when it does.
Xbox Series s and X
conclusion
As of right now, Xbox is my choice to buy at launch because I think it has more to offer, especially if you already have a PS4. The Xbox Series S is also a great console for parents to buy; Getting the next-gen gaming machine for your kids for spending a fraction of what the top-of-the-line console costs is great. On the other hand, there is Xbox Game Pass that now includes EA games, which in itself is an excellent deal. This combination will work well in a value conscious market like India. As for the PS5, I think I’ll wait and pick it up when a pro version comes out.
