The next Windows 10 update has been dubbed the October 2020 Update and should be available next month, in October of course, and the final work now begins to prepare for release.
In a blog post, Microsoft officially named the 20H2 update and let us know that it made it to the Release Preview; in other words, the testing stage where this is now the final version (in theory, only a little adjustment left, unless it is important they run into last minute problems).
Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager, Windows Insider Program, commented: “We believe build 19042.508 is the final build and we still plan to continue to improve the overall October 2020 Update experience on customer PCs as part of our cadence. normal service. “
Testers in the release preview channel will initially get the finished update via Microsoft’s ‘finder’ scheme, which means they need to manually search and choose to download the update at this point (under Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update). Microsoft further clarified that the update is beginning to roll out for those on the beta channel.
There is a major known issue highlighted in the blog post, namely that build 19042.508 suffers from a bug that breaks the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). This is the nasty ‘item not found’ error as previously reported as an issue with cumulative update KB4571756 (which includes 19042.508).
Microsoft has successfully resolved this issue and is now working to implement a fix that it promises will be included in the next service release for the preview release of the October 2020 Update.
Minor update
As you may recall, the October 2020 update is one of Microsoft’s minor updates, like the second half 2019 update, except that it applies a bit more work.
Those who have the previous May 2020 update installed will be able to get the new update as a simple enablement package, basically by pressing a switch to turn it on, while those who have not yet moved to the May 2020 update will get the update from October 2020 Update as a full download (in other words, a major feature update that will be a significant download and take some time to apply).
The October 2020 update offers a bit more changes than last year’s H2 update, as mentioned, and that includes a new look for the Start menu and a better way of working for Windows 10 tablet users.
