Will be the iPhone 12 Do you use a USB-C connection or stick with Lightning? Lightning has been around since iPhone 5 in 2012, when it debuted as a replacement for the old 30-pin charger that had been around since the iPod. Lightning had its advantages, a long time ago: It was small and allowed for faster data transfer. But we’ve been living in the USB-C era for years. Lightning feels old by comparison.

Apple’s iPad lineup has started to change: the iPad Pro first, now the Ipad air this year. All MacBooks have been moved to USB-C / Thunderbolt 3. I can charge a iPad Pro, Macbook Pro, Nintendo switch, Google Stadia controller and Oculus Quest 2 all of common charging cables. And then Lightning for the rest.

At the moment, there is a power strip on my home office desk studded with all the bricks and wires I need to charge all my random devices. I see a ton of wearable-specific chargers, but for everything else, it’s pretty much all USB-C. Everything, that is, except the iPhone and the few other Apple devices that still use Lightning.

I hate dongles. And I dislike the proprietary charging cables even more. At least one could be removed on future iPhones.

I don’t think I need to explain why USB-C should be on the iPhone. Because … do all other phones use it? Because half of Apple devices do it, more or less? And it would also allow for a smoother flow of accessories and dongles for the iPhone and iPad Pro and other products I use. Sure, I can do a lot of those things with Lightning and a dongle – I could stream to a TV with HDMI, or use a microSD card to read data from the camera. But still, USB-C would be much better.

Well, this could go too far. But you could do it on an iPad Pro.

Sure, you may have all those Lightning accessories that you may need to replace. Who cares? Unlike the evolution from 30-pin to Lightning, which involved two waves of proprietary ports and accessories, USB-C skips all of that. And, again, here’s the great news: Apple has already made the move. Or he made the move halfway.

Maybe the iPhone 12 doesn’t have USB-C. But if that’s the case, it should come next year. Don’t skip it. Do not run out of port and merge everything in a free port slab as everyone is anticipating. No Please. If the iPhone is an everyday computer, it would be extremely helpful if it had an everyday port as well. Just a small one.
