Grey’s Anatomy Fans collectively screamed on their televisions when Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) left Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington). The couple has always appeared strong, bathing with love and support at all times. But in Grey’s Anatomy Season 16, Episode 16 – titled “Leave a Light On” – Alex abandoned his wife and sent Jo’s divorce papers in a cowardly letter. However, as the season continued, Jo came out on the other side. Recently, showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed why the writers decided that Jo would recover so quickly after her separation from Alex.
Why did Alex and Jo get divorced in “Grey’s Anatomy”?
In “Leave a Light On,” Alex left the letters from Jo, Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo), Richard Webber (James Picken Jr.), and Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to explain their sudden MIA status. Apparently Alex reconnected with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) when she approached Meredith’s medical license audience in episode 350.
Alex discovered that Izzie gave birth to twins after using the embryos they produced when she contracted cancer. Then Alex, who realized he was still in love with Izzie, decided to pick up and drop Jo to raise their children in Kansas. He also sent Jo signed divorce papers along with his actions at Gray Sloan Memorial.
By the end of “Leave a Light On”, viewers knew Jo was going to be fine. Her best friend Link (Chris Carmack) offered to take her out for a drink. But then Maggie (Kelly McCreary) called Jo for surgery. He took a deep breath and took his first step forward.
Whiskey tonight. I’m working today, “said Jo. In response, Link called Jo his hero. Then Jo replied, “Mine too.”
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 16 showrunner talks about Jo’s future after Alex
Instead of falling apart, Jo became his own hero in Grey’s Anatomy. Of course, it would have been understandable if the character started spiraling. But there seems to be a reason why Jo didn’t break up after her split with Alex.
When talking to TVLine after Grey’s Anatomy End of season 16, Vernoff spoke about the breakup of Alex and Jo. And since Jo recovered from a mental breakdown after discovering he was the product of rape, the showrunner explained that he couldn’t go through with the character again.
“I didn’t want anyone to go through that,” said Vernoff. “[Camilla] he had had such a good time through many months of very dark stories, and he didn’t want any of us to see Jo go into a hole again. “
Vernoff also offered an insight into Jo’s perspective, noting that the uncertainty was far worse than the reality.
“I have had the experience in my life where the pain of not knowing is so much worse than a very painful truth, ”said Vernoff. “Jo had so many episodes of not knowing [where Alex was] that even though the [eventual] the answer was terribly painful, there was really honest relief [in just knowing what was up]. “
Vernoff continued: “Getting an answer finally allowed him to feel strangely better than when he was in the dark. Jo had imagined all the worst possible scenarios. And despite the fact that one of them came true, just having the information allowed him to keep going. It felt like she had cried a lot over the relationship in the weeks leading up to receiving that letter. “
Now where is Jo going when Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 is back? On April 9, Vernoff told Variety the original plan for the Luddington character in the final episodes of season 16, which were cut due to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). But Vernoff still wants to give Jo some fun next season, along with his new friend and roommate, Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli).
“What we had planned was a lot of Levi-Jo comedy,” said Vernoff. “I feel like Camilla has earned the right to play a lighter story. And it has always been my experience that there is a form of mourning that is dramatic, and there is a form of mourning that is largely comical, both in life and on television. And we’ve leaned in to let her play the comedy. We will probably continue with that plan to move to season 17. “
