The World Health Organization has warned that humanity must prepare for a new pandemic. This is stated in a statement published on the WHO website, distributed on Friday, November 6, before the 73rd World Health Assembly, which will be held by teleconference from November 9 to 14.
Preparing for the next likely pandemic is one of the key items on the next assembly’s agenda.
“We must prepare for the next pandemic now. Last year, we saw that countries with a strong health emergency preparedness infrastructure were able to quickly take action to contain and combat the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, ”the report says.
The organization believes that the global community can defeat COVID-19 through the power of science and solidarity. The statement also notes that “many states and cities have successfully prevented and controlled transmission using a comprehensive, evidence-based approach.” The WHO recalled in this regard that the world has come together around a “plan to accelerate the development of vaccines, diagnostics and therapies.”
It is also planned to discuss the reform of the WHO to achieve the goals of the “3 billion”, announced in 2019. It is about reaching 1 billion more people with health services by 2024, providing 1 billion more people with better protection in emergencies and improving health and well-being for another billion.
The spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, began in late December last year. The Chinese city of Wuhan became a hotbed of infection. For several months, the disease has spread to more than 210 countries around the world. On March 11, the WHO declared a coronavirus pandemic.
According to Worldometer data as of November 6, more than 49.1 million cases of COVID-19 were recorded on the planet, more than 1.2 million people died, 35 million were cured.
