See updates below.
The PlayStation 5 is almost here. Some of us were lucky enough to get a pre-order for Sony’s next-gen console. Many others weren’t thanks to the high demand and abundance of scalper bots.
Thankfully, you’ll get another chance to get your own PS5 this Thursday, November 12, when the console hits shelves in the US and again next week on the 19th for many other regions, including the UK.
However, you would be remiss if I told you that your chances were very good. Thanks to the realities of the supply chain and the danger posed by COVID-19, it will not be possible to walk into a store to buy a PS5, at least at launch. For now, you’ll have to order a PS5 online and then, at least in brick-and-mortar stores like Target, go to the store to pick up your order.
It’s unclear when exactly each different retailer will start selling the PS5 on launch day, but Looks like 12:01 am ET is when the fun begins, then you will want to stay up late tonight or wake up very early.
Your best bet is to log in early and keep updating. Make sure you are logged into the website from which you are trying to place an order and that your payment information is saved. This will save time and could mean the difference between getting a console or losing it.
These are the sites to keep an eye on:
Newegg offers several different packages for the PS5, and while these are obviously more expensive, they come with things like additional controllers, games, etc. They are also more likely to be available when the console starts.
Other retailers like GameStop will also offer bundles. I’ll update this post as more options appear.
The PS5 costs $ 499 for the version with a disc drive and $ 399 for the digital edition. That’s a $ 100 savings for the exact same machine minus the drive, so unless you intend to play UHD Blu-Rays or buy used games, it’s a great deal.
If you miss it tomorrow, there will be a better chance of getting a PS5 during the holiday season, including Black Friday. A great tool that you can use to keep track of when the PS5 is available again is Popcart. You can sign up to be notified when units are available again from various retailers, giving you a slight edge over the competition.
Best Buy and GameStop have stated that they will have PlayStation 5 units in stock for Black Friday, although GameStop will be in store only.
You can also sign up to win a PS5 through Burger King. More details on that here.
Update: Well that sold out fast
Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the same issues gamers faced when pre-ordering the PS5 continued on launch day.
This is largely due to COVID-19 and Sony’s decision not to sell any units in the store. Having to order them online meant that price increases could still upset potential buyers’ plans.
I heard some players got lucky buying packages, like this one at Costco, although even that one now seems to be out of stock.
Meanwhile, resellers and opportunists are selling PS5 units for between $ 1,000 and $ 2,000 or more on eBay. Whatever you do, don’t buy these expensive consoles. You reward bad behavior and back down for no good reason. I’m sure the PS5 is great and all, but not $ 2000. (Mine is still in transit).
I will continue to search the internet and update this post if I find anything. Don’t forget to pay close attention to @ Wario64 Also, as I’ve seen him tweet some links to the PS5 stock later in the day, long after it was thought to be completely sold out.
In the meantime, if you want to feel really bad, head over to the PS5 reddit, where people post their success stories and photos. At least it seems like quite a few people (real, real people) got a PS5 today.
If you want to feel a little better, remember that much of the world won’t even be able to get their hands on one until next week.
If you got a PS5, tell me what you think. I have read a couple of stories of people whose console died in an hour. That is the worst kind of luck. ResetEra user Creepy Woody described his experience and it is truly a horror story:
“My PS5 is dead.
“I turned it on and did the configuration, played the Astro bot for half an hour and installed some games (Miles, God of War, Days Gone). Then he shut down the system (completely off, not in sleep mode) and left it for a few hours.
“When I come back I will turn it on through the Dualsense. Nothing. Okay, try the power button. Nothing. Maybe you had a power outage, check the switch, it’s okay. Everything else in the house is fine.
Okay, try a different outlet, no. Try my PS4 Pro power cable in the shape of 8, but no “.
See. Things could be worse.

Here’s something I wrote about why you can stop worrying about whether or not you get a next-gen console at launch. Seriously, it’s okay if you don’t get one right away. Do not worry Be Happy.
And here’s my case for the PS5 over the Xbox Series X. Both are great consoles with lots of advantages, but the PS5 has a few distinct advantages.
