WhatsApp starts testing multiple device logins, and more

With WhatsApp constantly evolving, new features, such as multi-device sign-in support, are long overdue. However, it appears that the Facebook-owned company has started testing this and a bunch of other features with the latest beta updates.

[Update 09/21]: Even more information has been shared by WABetaInfo about WhatsApp logins on various devices. Previously seen in WhatsApp Beta update version 2.20.196.8, some now see a “Linked Devices” section suggesting a close version for this feature for improved usability.

It appears that you will be able to choose to participate in a multi-device beta that will allow you to link even without an internet connection. We’re not entirely sure how you’ll be able to sync messages between devices without a web connection, but if it works, it works.

WABetaInfo suggests that you will be able to use up to 4 devices simultaneously when the Paired Devices feature becomes available at some point in the future. They also suggest that when enabled, you won’t need to have your phone turned on, shedding some light on the “no internet connection required” stipulation.

As mentioned many times, WhatsApp is developing the best function: it will allow you to use the same WhatsApp account in 4 different devices at the same time.

What is the advantage? You will not need an internet connection on the main phone, so you can use WhatsApp Desktop when your phone is off, for example, or other devices.

WhatsApp is actually planning a new modern user interface for the desktop client, showing how chat history is migrated from your device and that the process is end-to-end encrypted.

They also hint that we will be able to view the full chat logs and chat history on all devices, with the process fully end-to-end encrypted for better overall privacy. However, what the login process will look like on various devices within WhatsApp is another matter. We still don’t see the option with the most recent beta update. However, if you’re enrolled, now might be the time to check if you have the Paired Devices option available.

[Update 08/24]: More information on the upcoming storage usage feature has appeared, courtesy of WABetaInfo. The upcoming storage usage feature should help you better manage how WhatsApp uses your smartphone’s storage space.

With a little extra digging, WABetaInfo found new evidence of improved features like the ability to find large and forwarded files of chats and contacts. Essentially, you’ll be able to instantly filter out forwarded media and large files, making it easier to remove them from your device and freeing up valuable storage.

The next “Storage Usage” menu will include a handy bar that will give you a visual indicator of what is clogging your smartphone. You can also see which chats are taking up most of your internal storage, with the contact picture and name next to the used space.

It’s worth noting that none of the aforementioned features are “live” yet, but active development is ongoing, which means we’ll probably see them in a future update.

[Update 08/10]- WABetaInfo has done it again, this time unearthing some additional details about possible chat syncing between devices when multiple devices are connected to a WhatsApp account. It’s worth noting that the feature is not yet available, but work is currently underway to provide a fairly substantial option for those with more than one mobile device or tablet.

When connected to Wi-Fi, it appears that you will be able to download and access recent messages on your paired devices. We already know that an arbitrary limit of 4 devices will be able to access your account. It is not clear if this includes WhatsApp Web or if it is treated as a separate device in this case.

It also appears that once you have downloaded your messages to an access device, an internet connection will not be needed to use the app. However, we imagine that the ability to send and receive messages will be blocked without an active data connection, be it mobile or Wi-Fi.

Currently the only evidence was found in the iOS version of WhatsApp, but we are still expecting feature parity when it launches soon. As for the release date, we are not sure yet, as the multi-device option has been in the works since early 2020. Expect to learn more in the coming months.

[Update 07/27]: WhatsApp enthusiast WABetaInfo has found more information about multiple device logins. The feature looks like it will be known as “paired devices” and will give you the ability to add and manage your connected devices. It seems like this time it will be limited to just 4 devices, although that might be more than enough for most people.

The Facebook Portal is also mentioned, although it bears a striking resemblance to WhatsApp’s web connection feature that allows you to send and receive messages from a connected laptop, Mac, or PC at the same time.

Unfortunately, no other information has been found, but it appears that this feature is being tested at least in internal beta versions. We’d love to see it in action on various mobile devices, but it’s clearly in the early stages of development.

Constant code finder WABetaInfo has found a number of features that are being tested in the latest beta versions for iOS and Android. Multi-device login support is likely a feature that will truly transform the way the messaging platform is used by millions of people around the world. Not having to log out of all devices would save a ton of frustration, something the reviewers would greatly appreciate as well.

At the moment, you can only have a mobile device connected to WhatsApp, with another PC, Mac or web browsers connected. You can switch between these, but only one can log in at a time. This makes smooth use difficult and switching devices frustrating at best, especially since the login process is so complicated and lengthy.

We must emphasize that compatibility with multiple devices is not user-oriented within the beta versions of WhatsApp at the moment. It will probably come in a future update, but WABetaInfo has found that it is being tested with up to four devices connected simultaneously. This is not as high as services like Telegram, but it is still much better than the current limit of two devices.

Alongside this, it appears that WhatsApp will be getting some other major search updates as well. You will soon be able to “search by date” when reviewing your existing conversations and group chats. This will make it much easier to find specific messages and images for the date. Screenshots show the iOS version of this feature, but an update to the Android beta channel is likely soon. Not only will you be able to search your messages by date, but we will also soon have the ability to search for messages on the web. This is a small lever that will allow you to search the content of the message using the application’s web browser.
