Biometric authentication is used as a form of identification and to obtain permission on the person’s account that matches the fingerprints or any other biometric means installed by that person. It can be fingerprints, facial identification, voice, etc. Biometric authentication is becoming very popular day by day. Many phones use face identification or fingerprints to unlock phones. It is also used by banks for security reasons and at ATMs to withdraw money.
Whatsapp, the Facebook-owned American messaging app that has over 2 billion users, has been in the news for quite some time. Earlier this year, WhatsApp got a lot of heat from people, but it soon recovered from that. You now have another feature available to your users. The many benefits that WhatsApp brought us by allowing the application to register on the desktop using QR code authentication, now gives you more security. WhatsApp has enabled a biometric system to log into your account from the desktop. If you have the biometric feature on your phone, you would unlock the app with it to log into the desktop. The feature can be used with fingerprints, face identification, or even iris scanning. This feature will be available by default on iOS devices that have iOS 14 with Touch ID or Face ID and on Android devices that have the same features installed.
WhatsApp says that by bringing this feature, it’s just making sure that if someone had access to a phone, they won’t be able to log into their Whatsapp on the desktop and look at messages and media without biometric verification. Users will need to link their account with the biometric facility to provide more security for their accounts. Those users who do not have biometric authentication installed or who for some reason have not enabled it on their devices, will log into their WhatsApp account on the desktop as usual.
However, this does not mean at all that WhatsApp and Facebook would obtain the fingerprints of their users or that they can use and track their data or by any means by looking at their facial identification. User privacy will be protected whatever happens. This update is introduced only to provide additional security to the user’s account.
WhatsApp has announced that this new feature will be available for use in the coming weeks on suitable devices.
