High-end on-ear headphones weren’t exactly made to be the mainstays of the gym, far from it, in fact. With that in mind, if these complaints continue to grow, it could be a huge concern for potential AirPods Max owners.
The AirPods Max was introduced in December 2020 as Apple’s first on-ear audio solution. The headphones come equipped with active noise cancellation, adaptive equalizer, and a spatial audio feature that is designed to create an immersive audio listening experience when viewing content with 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos sound formats. They also come with a $ 549 price tag, which means that those who purchase these cans should expect a durable product that will last for many years.
As reported by MacRumorsHowever, several new AirPods Max owners have raised concerns about condensation buildup inside the earbuds after longer listening sessions. What’s more concerning is that several homeowners have reported that they noticed condensation after listening under normal conditions, usually indoors at normal temperatures. If they had been exercising or outside in particularly hot weather, this type of condensation would be more expected. But claims that certain pairs of AirPods Max are experiencing condensation issues during what can only be described as standard listening is a huge red flag.
Why condensation could spell disaster for AirPods Max
The key feature here, or rather the lack of it, is the fact that the AirPods Max doesn’t come with a weather resistance rating. To be fair, they have a lot of solid features, from 20 hours of battery life with active noise cancellation to one-touch setup with a user’s existing Apple products. But one of the AirPods Max’s glaring weaknesses is its lack of protection against water and other elements of the weather.
It shouldn’t have been a big deal, as these headphones have never been marketed as training-oriented wearable devices. In other words, they were not intended to be used in an environment where they would get wet. However, now that there appears to be a problem with condensation, the longevity of the AirPods Max is beginning to be questioned. In the short term, condensation should not have an immediate impact on AirPods Max functionality as long as it is not significant. But, over longer periods of time, it’s entirely possible for these expensive headphones to start to break down as a result of condensation seeping into the earbuds.
There are a few solutions to this apparent condensation problem. Owners experiencing this issue with their AirPods Max can return them, and judging from the comments on MacRumors, some have already done so. Or, owners can save a considerable amount of money and invest in a different pair of headphones or earphones. For those who still want to invest in the Apple community, the AirPods Pro have an IPX4 weather resistance rating for protection against sweat and water. In fact, for the price of the AirPods Max, users can get two pairs of AirPods Pro, just to have a backup on hand.
