Sonic the Hedgehog launched in 1991 and will turn 30 in 2021. In an announcement to European investors, Sega has announced that a number of major events, games and announcements will take place during this time.
Here’s what IGN Southeast Asia would like to see announced during Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary.
New Mainline 3D game
This could be a given, although we hope it’s a great Sonic experience overall. The last 3D game, Sonic Forces, was empty and soulless, as it was a disaster in terms of content and variety of gameplay.
Having a game that is more in line with Sonic Generations, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic Colors is what fans really need. Given it’s a 30-year anniversary, perhaps Sega could focus on the three-man teams we saw in Sonic Heroes, which is also a great way to get Sonic and his friends to share the limelight together.
Sonic mania 2
Sonic Mania was probably the best Sonic game of the last decade and it really was a massive creation by Sonic fans for Sonic fans. Having the fanatic developers in charge of the game really came in handy and provided Sonic Mania with a perfect balance of new elements and fan service.
Maybe a new Sonic Mania sequel or something similar would be a great addition to the 30th anniversary celebrations as it would be a great tribute to Sonic’s 2D roots. Perhaps the sequel could borrow elements from Sonic CD’s time travel elements and feature Knuckles Chaotix characters as playable characters.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie reveal
Thanks to the pandemic, the Sonic The Hedgehog theatrical movie became the last major movie that many people were able to see before entering the confinement. All things considered, the movie was a great way for people to get to know Blue Blur.
The post-credits scene showed us Miles “Tails” Prower searching for Sonic on Earth, and hopefully we’ll get to see what this sequel has to offer next year. Read more about our wish list for this upcoming movie here.
Sonic battle royale
If Mario could have a battle royale game for his 35th anniversary, it would be fitting for Sega’s mascot to do the same for his 30th anniversary. But instead of basing it on Sonic’s first effort, maybe a new 3D racing / battle royale hybrid is needed.
Think of it as a mix of Mario Kart, Sonic R, and a bit of Fall Guys. Combine that with the franchise’s signature high-speed platforming mechanics, cartoonish humor, and incredible music, and you’ve got a recipe for a great game. Mobile games, Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle are close examples, though a full battle royale is needed here for PC and console.
A new Sonic cartoon
A new animated series based on Sonic The Hedgehog is definitely needed for his 30th year as an icon. If anything, Sonic owes a lot to his success based on the combination of his video games and the original cartoons. Each player also has their own favorite animated series, such as the Jaleel White and Sonic Boom cartoon series, loaded with meta-humor.
This new hypothetical cartoon could mix the antics of early Sonic, the stories from the Sonic comic created by Archie Comics, and the anime-quality high-speed action scenes from Sonic X. Although, of course, much like Sonic Boom, the series could also be a meme machine like its predecessor.
Sonic may have had a pretty uneventful 2020, but hopefully that means Sega and the Sonic Team are really gearing up for their big 30th anniversary. We are definitely eager to know more about this.
