DAR ES SALAAM – On May 15, a passenger flight carrying humanitarian and health workers to Tanzania will arrive from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. This is the first such flight since commercial air services in Tanzania were suspended in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
The passenger air service, administered by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), is part of its global system to provide logistical support for the global COVID-19 response. The service ensures that humanitarian organizations can provide the people and burden necessary to sustain the relief operations on which millions of vulnerable people depend around the world.
The airlift system is based at the Global Humanitarian Response Centers in Guangzhou (China), Liege (Belgium), and Dubai (UAE) where supplies are manufactured, and regional centers in Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, Malaysia, Panama, and Dubai . Flights operate between global and regional hubs, and a fleet of smaller planes moves cargo and humanitarian personnel to specific countries, such as Tanzania. Once the service is fully operational, WFP hopes to maintain regular flights to key locations around the world.
“As the leading logistics agency of the United Nations, WFP has a key role to support the Government and the entire humanitarian community in ensuring that supplies and staff can get where they are needed,” said Michael Dunford, WFP Representative in Tanzania. “Our experience in operating logistics operations has enabled WFP to tailor our programs to provide common logistics services to support the global health and humanitarian response.”
In Tanzania, flights for humanitarian and health workers are expected every week. Upon arrival in Tanzania, passengers will follow the Tanzanian Government quarantine regulations.
