Western Digital has announced its new G-Technology-branded external SSD targeted at content creators and people with sensitive content using the company’s ArmorLock security platform.
The new platform combines sophisticated encryption algorithms with ease of use and remote administration. Rather than using password-based authentication on the device, Western Digital’s ArmorLock relies on biometric authentication (facial recognition or fingerprint scanner) or password used on modern smartphones and a special application that issues a key that unlocks the unit wirelessly when connected to a PERSONAL COMPUTER. Sandboxed ArmorLock applications also support remote management, allowing administrators to control multiple user access to multiple drives.
This approach removes passwords, makes the drive easier to use, and improves security because sometimes people use passwords that are too simple that are not hard to guess (or even write the passwords on the back of the drive).

The first drive to use the platform, Western Digital’s G-Technology ArmorLock encrypted NVMe SSD comes with AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption and NIST P-256 elliptical curve-based key management. The unit features third-party audited core crypto with side channel attack mitigation for additional protection. Also, the product automatically updates its firmware when connected to the ArmorLock application.
Performance wise, the G-Technology ArmorLock encrypted NVMe SSD is capable of up to 1000MB / s sequential read and write capability, which is in line with other drives that use a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C interface. .
In addition to sophisticated security technologies, G-Technology’s ArmorLock encrypted NVMe SSD can physically protect data. The unit comes in a rugged chassis that is IP67 water and dust resistant, can withstand a 1000 pound crush, and can also drop from three meters.
The G-Technology ArmorLock encrypted NVMe SSD is not cheap. The drive is currently available only in a 2TB configuration and is priced at $ 599 in the US and £ 559.99 in the UK.
