The Ethiopian government has reaffirmed once again that there will be no negotiation until the rule of law is upheld and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) gang is brought to justice.
Reporting to foreign media today, State Secretary for Access to Emergency Information Redwan Hussien said that “any mediation would encourage impunity.” Therefore, any partner who wants Ethiopia and the government to stick together must support the respect of the country’s law.
The secretary pointed out that equating the government with any subnational entity that threatens the very existence of the country would actually increase that impunity; and if impunity increases in Ethiopia, the country would not exist.
According to him, any country should put itself in the situation of Ethiopia. No country would allow an entity in a district to openly claim to have a rocket or missile and promise to attack its headquarters, dismantle the country, and openly attack its defense forces.
Redwan also paused in the question of whether there is any country in the world that sits down with such entities to negotiate. This simply encourages ungovernability, he stressed.
Highlighting the need to understand the country’s context, he said that “it is not about being averse to negotiation. It is not because we are reluctant to round table and civil cordial discussion; but until the rule of law is upheld until the gang is brought to justice, there is no way we can guarantee civil order in any country and in Ethiopia. “
Citing the short-term operation as a crucial move for the overall stability of the nation, Redwan said: “We are saying give us time because it is not going to take too long; it wouldn’t last forever. The operation is a very short operation that the people of Tigray understand ”.
If Ethiopia sits down with everyone who buys rockets and missiles; then everyone would be the ruler himself. Then no country could survive that way, the secretary emphasized.
Regarding the rumor that Vice Prime Minister Demeke’s visit to Uganda is about negotiating with the TPLF board, he said that Uganda never tried to mediate and Ethiopia also did not ask Uganda or any neighboring country to mediate because the country’s position is very clear.
A mission was sent to Uganda and the entire region and particularly to IGAD member countries to clarify Ethiopia’s position, Redwan added.
The visit has nothing to do with mediation. The delegation is really interested in conveying the prime minister’s message to clarify the country’s position.
