In the fourth quarter of 2017, Xiaomi overtook Samsung to become the leading smartphone provider in India. Since then, Samsung has been the second largest smartphone seller in the country. However, according to the latest Canalys data, Vivo outperformed Samsung in the Indian market to take second place in the first quarter of 2020.
The BBK-owned smartphone maker saw a nearly 50% increase in shipments during the quarter, allowing it to capture 19.9% of the market. Samsung shipments, on the other hand, fell nearly 14% during the quarter. While Vivo shipped 6.7 million smartphones between January and March, Samsung shipped 6.3 million units.
Calling Vivo’s winner “bittersweet,” Canalys analyst Madhumita Chaudary said in a statement:
The high sale this quarter was primarily due to planned bookings before the high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the unplanned shutdown in late March has disrupted the provider’s plans. With IPL postponed, and much of its inventory on blocked offline channels, Vivo will have a hard time seeing a quick sale when the block is lifted.
Xiaomi continued to rank # 1 in the country, shipping 10.3 million smartphones and capturing a 30.6% market share. Realme also registered impressive growth during the first quarter of the year, with an annual growth of 200%. It shipped a total of 3.9 million smartphones, compared to 1.3 million units during the first quarter of 2019. OPPO, another BBK-owned smartphone maker, ranked fourth in the Indian smartphone market in the first quarter. 2020, with a market share of 10.4%.
