No, we still haven’t got it. Our Nokia 8.3 5G is being unpacked and tested by diligent Royal Mail employees. The phone was shipped by Nokia Mobile (thank you very much!) On September 25, and it is still somewhere in the UK, probably labeled as dangerous goods or smuggling :). So our good boy and obviously super-rich Youtuber Abdulla couldn’t wait for us to unpack it and ordered a Nokia 8.3 5G for him from China and delivered in just three days by DHL (damn German efficiency). He immediately made an unboxing video and first impressions of the second most anticipated Nokia device in 2020. Enjoy the video and also an inpatient version of Abdulla, be nice and subscribe to his channel. Also, we’d like to take a test drive and see how fast we can boost a Nokia YouTuber, which is a rare guy nowadays, to 100K subscribers :).
It is finally here. I don’t know if I’m dreaming, but I finally got my hands on the Nokia 8.3 5G. It feels like it was almost a past life when this was officially announced and I was excited to get my hands on it. However, since then, many different phones have come out with similar specifications, and many of them seem to have completely lowered the price of the Nokia 8.3 5G. But does Nokia have a trump card that it can use to justify its existence? I’ll save it for my full review, but for now here is my unboxing video:
It’s longer than I anticipated, but I tried to cover as many aspects of the phone as possible so that potential buyers would get a good idea of what to expect. These are my findings so far:
- I was expecting a big phone, but was still amazed at how big it actually is. The Nokia 8.3 5G is bigger than Samsung’s Note 20 Ultra. If you want a compact phone, this is not it.
- Build quality looks excellent. As you would expect, this phone is very pleasant to hold. It feels expensive thanks to how dense it is at 220 grams, but it also feels durable. This is one of the aspects that Nokia Mobile has been nailing for the last few years.
- The color is very pretty in person. The cyan / teal hue only appears under light and is fascinating to look at.
- The screen is also very nice. At this price, I want a refresh rate above 60Hz, but other than lacking in the extraordinary, this display is really nice to look at.
- The performance so far has been flagship class. Speed, smoothness, transitions are fluid. However, I am using the 8 / 128GB version so keep that in mind.
- The speaker is loud and crisp, but I need to test more to see how well it handles different tones.
- The camera at first glance looks good too. From my first snapshots, the main shooter has impressive dynamic range, and the wide-angle camera is flagship. You’ll have to test further to see how well they handle low-light situations.
- There are many different settings for video, and this is something I have been waiting for from Nokia Mobile for a long time. H-log, 21: 9 video, action cam, professional settings are present. Unfortunately though, there is no 4K / 60fps recording option and for whatever reason the front camera can shoot 2k / 60fps while the main camera can shoot 4k / 30fps or 1080p / 60fps.
- The software is Android One unsurprisingly. The phone starts up with Android 10 out of the box. The contribution of the Nokia mobile to the software is the camera application, PureDisplay, the color temperature of the screen, the double tap to wake up and the fingerprint scrolling.
- The fingerprint so far is pretty fast and reliable. I also like its lateral position.
- The vibration motor is ready.
- The biggest omissions are the lack of IPS water resistance rating, the lack of high refresh rate, and the lack of wireless charging.
Overall, my first impressions are pretty positive, as you can see, as the phone seems to have nailed the basics, but the devil is always in the details. This phone is not cheap and even though I bought it for around $ 600 people are expecting a bit longer. In my opinion, if the camera can live up to the PureView brand, this phone might have a shot.
