Over the weekend, the UK reversed plans to relax restrictions over Christmas and announced strict closures across much of the country, citing concerns about a variant of the coronavirus believed to be far more infectious.
The alarm over the new variant, which was first identified in south-east England, has left British travelers isolated from much of Europe and other parts of the world as countries imposed travel restrictions from the UK.
While the new Covid-19 variant is believed to originate in England, it has also been identified in Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia, World Health Organization Covid-19 Technical Director Maria Van said on Sunday.
