UN Chief of Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock informed the Security Council on Wednesday that COVID-19 infections in Syria are significantly higher than reported figures.
Lowcock said that “we will not be able to understand the scope of the outbreak unless and until laboratory testing is increased across the country.”
The Emergency Relief Coordinator reported that more than four million people were receiving assistance each month and that routine immunizations were taking place despite the wide distribution caused by the pandemic.
Syria, which had a population of 23 million before its conflict began in March 2011, has recorded 3,540 confirmed coronavirus cases and 155 deaths in government-controlled areas.
The actual number of cases is believed to be much higher due to limited evidence.
Coronavirus tests in private clinics cost around $ 60, too expensive for most Syrians, whose average salary is less than $ 100 a month.
The government conducts about 300 free tests each day for people with symptoms.
