The UN confirms that the ban on nuclear weapons will take effect next year.
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will enter into force on January 22, 2021, according to Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary General.
A statement issued on Sunday October 25 said: “The Secretary General commends the States that have ratified the Treaty and salutes the work of civil society, which has been fundamental in facilitating the negotiation and ratification of the Treaty.
Starting in January, the development, production, testing, storage, use or threats of use of nuclear weapons will be prohibited.
So far, none of the world’s major nuclear powers – the United States, Britain, France, China or Russia – have signed it.
The statement issued by the UN Secretary-General emphasized the importance of the Treaty to eradicate the threat of nuclear weapons globally: “It represents a significant commitment towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons, which remains the highest priority of disarmament of The United Nations”.
