UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) – One of the two UN teams tasked with assessing humanitarian needs in Ethiopia’s Tigray region is stranded, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said on Thursday.

A team is now in Mekelle, capital of Tigray, waiting to proceed to Adigrat. However, the other team had not moved to Shire as planned due to additional permits requested by the authorities, the spokesperson said, citing UN humanitarians.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Peace is expected to facilitate the authorization as soon as possible, he told a news conference.

Health, nutrition, food, water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as non-food items, are the priority needs, Dujarric said.

The spokesman said on Wednesday that humanitarian assistance began gradually pouring into Tigray, although access was limited in areas where the conflict continued.

Since November 4, the Ethiopian government has been conducting military operations against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which rules the northernmost state of Tigray in Ethiopia. Federal government operations followed the TPLF attack on an Ethiopian Defense Force command base in Mekelle. Final product
