Unlike the United States, the United Kingdom has been a notoriously harsh environment for Nintendo in recent years. The country doesn’t hate Nintendo products, but it seems to like the other competing platforms much more. Still, as it shows time and again, the Switch plays by its own set of rules. Compared to its performance in the UK in 2019, sales were up 63.1% last year in the UK.
This comes from a report published by GamesIndustry. The report also reveals other key data points, such as how Switch sales have increased 96% in the last four weeks (November 2020). Of all the games sold during the month of November, Switch titles were the most popular, accounting for 35% of all titles sold during the month.
Still rocking it
Note that this all happened in conjunction with the releases of the Sony PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S from Microsoft at the beginning of the month. Probably in light of the shortage of stock for the three new consoles, the Switch (and Switch Lite) gained a lot of momentum as buyers searched for new hardware. Even though the Switch platform is almost four years old at the moment, it is still attracting massive waves of new customers in country after country. The system has lit up the sales charts across the board practically every month since its launch, so its continued performance is no surprise.
What really changes the game is when stocks of the aforementioned next-gen systems become more available. The Switch still retains the lower price advantage, but the Xbox Series S is priced the same as a flagship Switch. That means the hybrid will have to rely primarily on its unique characteristics to keep the masses looking to its side as the new generation continues to expand.
