Through an app update today, Twitter advanced plans to widely implement its Spaces voice chat feature. Once this feature is available, anyone can create live rooms with up to 10 people speaking and an unlimited number can join in to listen.
The Twitter app update says:
Introducing Spaces, where live audio conversations happen. Now you can tweet and talk. Spaces brings Twitter to life.
Although the release notes make it look like Twitter is ready to roll out the Spaces for Everyone feature, the Edge reports that work remains to be done and that the goal is to launch the feature in April.
Interestingly, we heard the news in a Twitter space, hosted by the company. Twitter’s plans are not set in stone, but the gist is that they are trying to bring the product to a state where anyone can host a Twitter space starting in April. April is the goal. Meanwhile, iOS and Android users can join in and speak in existing spaces.
The company has been testing this feature with some users for a few months. In its current form, anyone can join a space, but only members of beta testers can create a space. It became a trend on the platform, with many users writing in their bio that they are “beta testers” of the feature. The team behind Spaces is in constant contact with Twitter users to share experiences, comments and what they are implementing on their platform.
For now, only people on mobile devices can follow Spaces conversations, as it is not available through its website or Twitter for Mac.
How to start a conversation on Twitter Spaces
When the feature is available to everyone, follow these steps:
- Open the Twitter application on your iPhone;
- Press and hold the “Create Tweet” button;
- Press the new Spaces icon on the far left;
- You can also tap your profile picture under Fleets, scroll to the far right, and tap Spaces.
The user can also select who can join with speaking privileges by choosing from “Everyone, People you follow, or Only people you invite to speak”, allowing the user to send DM invitations.
You can edit the Twitter Spaces room name and allow sharing of transcripts (only available in English for now).
