Twitter launches ephemeral tweets called ‘fleets’ for all users

Twitter announced today the global launch of a new ephemeral tweet option called “Fleet”, which will last 24 hours on the social network before disappearing. Like stories on Instagram or Facebook, fleets are at the top of the Twitter timeline.

Fleets don’t have public comments, likes or retweets, don’t appear in searches or moments, and can’t be embedded on external websites. Before today’s launch, the fleet function was being tested in countries including Brazil, India, South Korea, and Italy.

Twitter says it hopes that adding ephemeral tweets will help people feel more comfortable sharing casual thoughts and opinions without the pressure of earning retweets and likes. In countries where fleets were tested, Twitter says that people spoke more on Twitter and were more open to sharing what they had in mind.

Fleets can include photos or videos and can be customized with different background and text options. The feature can be accessed by tapping the “Share” icon at the bottom of a tweet and then choosing the “Share to Fleet” option.

Short-lived content like fleets has been popular on other social media. Snapchat was the first social network to implement ephemeral content, and since then Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Instagram have a “story” option where the content is removed after 24 hours. Until now, Twitter has had no equivalent.

The fleets are rolling out today on iOS and Android, and will be available to everyone in the coming days. by MacRumors readers, make sure you are following the MacRumors Twitter account where we share news, interesting forum threads, fun facts and trivia, and in the future, more casual fleets.
