It seems we’ve heard about Apple AirTags for a lifetime, which means at least for the entirety of 2020, but it seems like Samsung might have its own version of the technology before Apple.
Apple AirTags is set to be Apple’s version of tile trackers, which attach to possessions so that they can be tracked if they are lost or stolen. However, as SamMobile found out, something called the ‘Galaxy Smart Tag’ just got certified in Indonesia, which sounds a lot like AirTags or Tile Trackers.
This certification doesn’t give us much information about the Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag, but presumably they would work similarly to how all these trackers do. However, there is a second clue to how these devices would work.
Samsung SmartThings Search
Samsung recently launched SmartThings Find for a global market: it is a tool for Samsung devices that can locate your technology using the Samsung Find My Mobile application.
This can work for smart watches and headphones even if they are not connected to a mobile network; presumably, the technology used to do so is exactly the same as for smart tags. A Tile-like tracker could easily fit into this app that Samsung already has, and it would be especially useful for people with multiple company devices.
Of course, this is all speculation, and smart tags could be something else that Samsung has in store, only with a badly thought-out name. Whatever it is, we may hear more about it at the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S21, which is expected to take place in January or February 2021.
