International travelers must be quarantined for 10 days in government-provided accommodations to stop new variants of the virus, says PM.

  • The official death toll from coronavirus in the UK has surpassed 100,000 as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the quarantine of international travelers’ hotels to prevent new variants of the virus from reaching the country.
  • More than 100.3 million people around the world have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and about 2.1 million have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. More than 55.5 million patients have recovered.

British Prime Minister confident vaccine supply will continue to accelerate

Johnson has said he is confident that the country’s supplies of the COVID-19 vaccine will continue to accelerate.

“I’m sure … we’ll be able to continue that accelerating supply curve as well,” Johnson said when asked about the possible vaccine shortage.

Questions about how many people are planning to come to the UK

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands, reporting from Gatwick airport near London, has said that Johnson is “basically saying that the UK will tighten restrictions” while trying to show that his government has control over the pandemic.

But Challands noted that there were doubts about “how many people were planning to come to the UK” at this point, given that it has just passed the dismal 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 and the number continues to rise by more than 1,000 a day.

Travelers to the UK from high-risk countries to quarantine for 10 days

Travelers coming to the UK from high-risk countries with COVID-19 will need to be quarantined for 10 days in government-provided accommodation to stop new variants of the virus, Johhnson said.

“We will require all who arrive who cannot be denied entry to isolate themselves in government-provided accommodations, such as hotels, for 10 days without exception,” he told lawmakers.

“They will be received at the airport and transported directly to quarantine.”
