On Friday, the Ethiopian government issued a final call, an ultimatum, to Ethiopians fighting alongside the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) to lay down their arms and return to a peaceful life.

The call goes out to those members of the TPLF force who did not play a criminal role in connection with the attack on the Ethiopian Defense Forces Northern Command on November 4. The government considered the attack a serious violation of the constitution and an act of treason. . He linked him to what he called the Board of the TPLF, a group within the organization that has a monopoly on political power.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office gave assurances to all those forces that fought alongside the TPLF saying that they will not face any legal consequences for their armed activity since November 4 as long as they resort to peaceful life.

There have been reports of a massacre and ethnic cleansing, including in Maikadra, near Humera, which used to be within Gonder province before the TPLF came to power in 1991, by TPLF forces.

The latest call for surrender also extends to fugitive TPLF leaders, but they will face legal consequences.

In addition to the attack on the Ethiopian Defense Forces, the government accuses the TPLF of illegal activities that endangered the unity of the people in the country. This, according to the statement from the Prime Minister’s office, happened before the group embarked on a war on November 4, 2020. As such, the TPLF is linked to the displacement of people in different parts of the country, including Benishangul Gumuz. , murders and insecurities.

The government said that the response to the attack on the Ethiopian Defense Force was a matter of moral and legal obligations. Consequently, the illegal group TPLF that used to be a threat to the country and the region is now out of date. The military capacity that was being prepared for three years is destroyed, the statement added. So far, around 21 senior TPLF officials have been captured and appeared in court. At least six other top TPLF leaders were killed in battle, including Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin.

However, the TPLF is still attempting military action in the region and there have been reports of security problems in the region. Contingents of TPLF forces, believed to be protecting fugitive TPLF leaders, were reportedly besieged this week in the Maychew area of ​​the region. High-level military officers who defected from the national army to serve in the TPLF forces are reportedly wiped out, according to an ESAT report, citing sources from the Defense Ministry. Getachew Assefa, the former Ethiopian Intelligence Director, is also dead, but due to heart problems, news yet to be verified from other sources.

On Thursday this week, the US State Department announced $ 52 million in humanitarian assistance to address the situation in the northern part of the country. He stated that the crisis in the region could worsen unless a “political solution” is sought.
