AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost regretted Honda’s exit from Formula 1, but says he still expects “good results” until the end of next season.

Honda announced on Friday that they would stop supplying power units at the end of the 2021 season and left both the Tost team and sister team Red Bull to seek another partner for the start of F1’s new technical era in 2022.

For Tost, who has been with AlphaTauri (formerly Toro Rosso) since its inception in 2006, it is a particularly difficult pill to swallow given that the team just handed Honda its second win of the season (and the fifth since its return to the sport. in 2015). at the Italian Grand Prix.

“Scuderia AlphaTauri and Honda have built a very good and professional relationship since we started cooperating in 2018,” he said. “It is a pity that Honda has decided to slow down their commitment to F1, because the performance of their power unit has been improving steadily and spectacularly to become one of the best engines on the grid in a short time, since they returned to the sport.

“I am convinced that together we will continue to achieve good results in the remaining races this season and next year.”

Apparently Honda’s environmental approach didn’t align enough with F1’s direction, and Todt pointed that out.

“We certainly respect the rationale behind Honda’s decision to focus on environmental initiatives and strive towards achieving carbon neutrality, we all at Scuderia AlphaTauri wish them the best to achieve all their goals and have a successful future ahead.

“We want to sincerely thank Honda for the fruitful cooperation, we really enjoy every day that we have been working together.

“It will not be easy to find an engine partner like Honda, but of course we will start looking at all possibilities to find the best power unit solution from 2022.”
