Actor Tom Cruise recently broke out with team members on the set of “Mission: Impossible 7” over a violation of Covid-19 protocols in an apparent effort to avoid further disruption to a film whose production has already been delayed by the pandemic.
“We’re creating thousands of jobs,” the film’s star Mr. Cruise can be heard saying in a leaked audio clip that is riddled with expletives. “I never want to see him again! Never! And if you don’t, you’re fired! “
The recording was published Tuesday by The Sun, a British tabloid, and its authenticity was confirmed by two sources close to the film. A source said that Mr. Cruise had been speaking with members of the “Mission: Impossible 7” crew about a violation of Covid-19 protocols on the London set, and that no further details were immediately available.
Cruise was apparently enraged after seeing two crew members standing together at a computer screen, in violation of an on-set rule that requires people to keep six feet apart, The Sun reported.
Paramount Pictures declined to comment and The Sun did not say when the 58-year-old Cruise was filmed. Reuters reported that the filmmakers of “Mission: Impossible 7,” the latest installment in the 24-year-old series, arrived in London earlier this month.
In February, production on the film was closed in Venice, Italy, amid a coronavirus outbreak in that country, Reuters reported. Production resumed in September and has since moved between Italy, Norway and Great Britain.
Production was halted again in October after 12 crew members on a set in Italy tested positive for the virus, Variety reported.
The leaked audio is of Mr. Cruise addressing some 50 staff members at a Warner Bros. film production complex in Leavesden, northwest London, The Sun reported. The tabloid said the actor wears a mask on set and has been personally enforcing Covid-19 rules, an effort to avoid further delays in filming.
In the leaked clip, Cruise told the team that production was the “gold standard” for Hollywood and that he had been talking to studios, producers and insurance companies who were “watching us and using us to make their movies.”
He said he would not accept any apology for what had happened on set, an apparent reference to the violation of the Covid-19 protocol.
“You can tell people that they are losing their homes because our industry is closed,” Cruise said, adding an expletive. “He is not going to put food on his table or pay for his college education.”
The sixth film in the series, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” opened in 2018 and grossed $ 791 million in worldwide ticket sales. It was also shot in Europe, among other locations, and its production was delayed after Mr. Cruise broke his ankle while performing a maneuver in which he crashed into the side of a building.
