The Tigray Regional State Council held an emergency meeting on Thursday on the measures the region has been taking against COVID 19.

Pursuant to a measure of social distancing, the meeting was organized via live video conference from Mekelle, according to state media Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).

The council has approved a decision to extend the emergency measures declared on March 26, 2020, for a period of three months.

Back then, the regional state suspended movements to and from urban centers and the countryside, a decision that sparked concern for those without essential household supplies, including food.

Large gatherings, whether sports, religious or cultural, are prohibited and market centers are closed. Similarly, recreational venues including bars, nightclubs, and khat venues cannot operate as of March 26, 2020.

Public servants in the region who are nursing mothers, near retirement age, and those with health problems can work from home until further notice.

It means that all the previous prevention measures, among other measures, will be in force for the next three months.

Council members from the region voted unanimously in favor of extending the emergency measures.

On Tuesday this week, the Tigray regional state pardoned more than 1,600 convicts from various correctional facilities in the region as part of a preventive measure against Coronavirus disease.

The region has launched the COVID 19 testing center, as reported by state-affiliated media this week.

So far, a total of 56 COVID patients have been reported in Ethiopia. Some of them are from the Amhara and Oromo regions of Ethiopia.
