For the first time in all time, Apple is giving iPhone and iPad owners more control over what’s on their screen and the apps they most want to work with. With the launch of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, You can now put widgets on the home screen, and there is even a drawing app. But also notably, you can completely get rid of Apple’s Mail and Safari apps by selecting another app as your default inbox or browser.

It’s a big step for iPhone ($ 699 at Amazon) and iPad ($ 270 at Back Market) users, and one that was long overdue.

The process to change your default mail and browser app is really simple, but also somewhat hidden. Apple doesn’t make it as easy as Android, where there is a dedicated section for setting default apps. You have to know where to look and then we’ll show you where it is.

Before you start, you should know that there is a bug in iOS 14

Apple is aware of a bug in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 which resets your default selections to Apple apps every time you restart your iPhone or iPad. The company told CNET in a statement that the issue would be fixed in a future update, but for now, that means that every time you restart your device, you’ll need to follow the steps outlined below to set your default app, again.

Set your default email or browser

Once your app of choice has been updated for iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, adding support for being set as a default app, here’s what you’ll need to do:

one. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

two. Scroll down until you find the application you want to use. For example, search for Google Chrome if you want it to be your main browser. Or Outlook if you want to use it as your email application. Then touch it.

3. Select the appropriate option, either Default browser app or Default email app.

Four. Select the application and exit the settings.

With a new default set of apps, every time you click a link, your preferred browser will open. Or every time you touch an email address, your email application will start. It’s about time Apple added this capability. Now, if only that bug fix could be released so we don’t have to keep resetting it.

The default apps aren’t the only hidden feature in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14; we found a lot. Of course, there are a few top features that change the way you’ll use your iPhone or iPad, and there are even some new privacy features that should keep your information more secure.
