While Apple has opted to go with a flat screen on the iPhone 12, to the adulation of many tech critics weary of curved screens, it appears Samsung is taking melting displays to the next level.
According to a patent filed by Samsung in late October, found by the Dutch website Let’s Go Digital, it shows a design for a possible Samsung Galaxy S21 that makes the Galaxy Fold 2 look docile.
Like Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Alpha, the Galaxy S21 could opt for a screen that wraps the entire device. Unlike the Mi Mix Alpha, which had a strip cutting through the screen to house a camera module, Samsung is apparently working around this by creating a sliding mechanism.
Yes, just like the slide-out phones of 15 years ago, according to the patent application, this new phone will employ a similar mechanism to reveal its cameras. Let’s Go Digital also put together a video showing its rendering. Know that this is not an official Samsung video.
If this is true, then in reality this Galaxy S21 is not a phone with a true immersive display. Instead, they are two interleaved curved screens.
And the front camera? Well, Samsung could use an in-screen camera, which means no hole or notch will be needed for the camera. However, we have heard that the Galaxy S21 will have a drilled hole. So this could be a completely separate model or maybe an early look at a completely new Samsung phone.
There is no set release date for the Galaxy S21, but rumors suggest it will be released in January 2021. Check out our Galaxy S21 hub for the latest leaks.
