We have high hopes for travel in 2021. There is no doubt that we are eager to get out and explore again; the only question is: where first? Fortunately, the end of the year usually means all sorts of ‘where to travel’ lists start to appear, and perhaps surprisingly even 2020 is no exception.
The most recent comes from National Geographic Traveler, which just released its annual “World’s Best” list. This year, they divided their list of 25 ‘rising destinations’ into five themes: sustainability, family, nature, adventure and culture. The magazine says that each of your choices is intended to serve as inspiration for future travel, whenever possible.
Highlights in the sustainability category include Alonissos in Greece, where a former shipwreck has been turned into an underwater museum, and the French territory of New Caledonia, which now has a 1.3 million square kilometer marine park. In the family section, they recommend the almost complete England Coastal Path, which will be the longest boardwalk path in the world.
Adventurers, they say, should go to the mountains, beaches and waterfalls of Dominica, while cultural vultures are advised to explore the native resistance of the Pueblo nations of New Mexico. Nature lovers, on the other hand, may be in the grassy savannahs of the Cerrado, Brazil, or the ‘last paradise’ of Australia’s Lord Howe Island, where only a select number of visitors are allowed at a time.
