Good news for avid stargazers: this month will mark the peak of visibility for the Taurid meteor showers, a natural shooting star phenomenon that looks almost like fireballs streaking through the sky. Don’t worry though, despite their rather aggressive name, the Southern and Northern Taurid meteor showers are extremely vibrant meteors that can only be seen in perfectly clear weather conditions.
According to the American Meteorite Society, the taurids (both branches) are “rich in fireballs and are often responsible for a higher number of fireball reports from September to November” and, while the detection of the Shocking meteor shower depends largely on the condition of the sky. The chances of detecting the phenomenon increase due to the slow speed of 28 kilometers per second that the rain travels.
While the visibility of a meteor shower is still highly dependent on a handful of factors, including the observer’s geographic coordinates, time of day, city light pollution, the Northern Taurid shower in particular will be the most radiant and easy to spot around midnight. in Victoria Harbor and Yuen Long on November 12, 2020, their peak day in Hong Kong, according to Vercalendar.
That said, according to the International Meteor Organization, the Taurid meteor shower has been active since Thursday, September 10, 2020 and will technically be visible in Hong Kong until Friday, November 20, 2020, so if you can’t catch A Look next week, be sure to keep an eye out during the month, especially on especially clear nights.
