The Sri Lankan Army has announced that it will assume responsibility for printing Driver’s licenses instead of using a private company.
While the statement by Sri Lankan Transport Minister Dilum Amungama has stated that the decision was made due to fiscal considerations, it follows a worrying “militarization of civilian functions”.
In May, the Economist reported on this worrying militarization of Sri Lanka and noted that the appointment of generals by Rajapaksa, many of them accused of war crimes, to take on civilian functions, including being “in charge of customs, the port authority, development, agriculture and poverty eradication.
Since the end of the armed conflict, the Sri Lankan army has maintained a strong presence in the Tamil homeland. In 2018, Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace and Justice highlighted the growing role of the military in tourism.
The first driver’s license will be presented to the head of the Sri Lankan army and the accused war criminal, Shavendra Silva.
