Spotify may remain the household name in music streaming despite Apple Music’s many controversies and rivalries, but that doesn’t always mean it has the best features in town. You may have been too busy defending yourself against those attacks that you may have been slow to roll out updates. It now announces a fairly small but potentially important feature for its users, who will now be able to search for songs on Android and iOS simply by typing parts of the lyrics.
The function works quite simply. Just enter a phrase in the mobile app and Spotify will show the songs that contain that, at least the songs that are in your massive collection. Admittedly, it’s a useful feature when you’re already in the Spotify app anyway.
The problem with this feature is that it is quite late for the party. Apple Music already had a feature that did exactly that in 2018, three years after the service launched.
There’s also the fact that there may be faster ways to discover songs based on their lyrics than searching on Spotify. Shazam, now owned by Apple, and the Google Assistant can do that for you if the song is playing and Google is most likely people’s first resource when searching for things on the web. Still, for Spotify users practically living on the mobile app, it’s a nice touch.
This small and almost silent update follows a constant stream of new features revolving around Spotify playlists and podcasts. However, the most high-profile news Spotify may have been involved with lately is its participation in the new Coalition for App Fairness formed by Epic Games and other apps and services that have a bone to choose from with Apple, which of course includes Spotify. .
