The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 came without S Pen support, rumors notwithstanding, but it looks like the next foldable phone in the series could finally add the stylus functionality power users have come to expect.
A report from The Elec, citing industry analysts, says Samsung may change the technology used in its S Pen stylus to work with the Fold series, from electromagnetic resonance (EMR) technology to active electrostatic solution technology. (AES).
When it comes to the end user experience, there is not a huge difference between EMR and AES. From a manufacturing standpoint, EMR is cheaper, but it has apparently been difficult for Samsung to integrate it into its flexible displays. That can now provoke a rethink.

Samsung is also reportedly looking to make its ultra-thin glass (UTG) twice as thick on the Galaxy Z Fold 3-60 micrometers instead of 30 micrometers (a micrometer is one thousandth of a millimeter). That will help it resist the pressure of a stylus.
Folds and notes
As we have already seen in the phones that have been launched so far, producing devices with folding screens is not easy at all. Adding stylus support to the mix makes the manufacturing challenge even greater, although Samsung seems willing to follow suit.
There have been unconfirmed reports that Samsung plans to phase out the Galaxy Note series and replace it with the Galaxy Z Fold series, and if that’s really happening, then the S Pen support on the Z Fold 3 makes sense.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 was only announced in August, so we’ll probably have to wait a bit to see what Samsung has in store. We haven’t heard many rumors about a new Fold yet, but it might come with some cool lighting effects.
Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S21 (or Galaxy S30) will launch in early January 2021, which may give us a few more clues as to what the company thinks when it comes to the Note and Fold phones later in the year.
