The President of Eritrea, Isaias Afeworki, along with his entourage visited the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on Tuesday, a project that brought Egypt to the brink of resorting to war against Ethiopia.
The president made no official comment about his visit to GERD. When he met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the Al-Ittihadiya Palace in early July 2020, the latter expressed his “interest in promoting relations and deepening strategic cooperation with Eritrea in all fields,” according to reported the Egyptian State Information Service. Isaías, for his part, said that “the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region are currently witnessing successive challenges and growing foreign interference.” The issue of the Renaissance dam was one of the topics discussed between the two leaders.
The reason Isaías did not comment on his visit to the GERD project probably has something to do with his desire to remain neutral on the issue, as he has been discussing the matter with the Sudanese and Egyptian authorities.
Eritrea’s Information Minister Yemane G. Meskel, who was tweeting updates on President Isaiah on different projects in Ethiopia, also did not tweet the visit to GERD. Rather, he retweeted Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Twitter message: “Much more awaits us. Success is inevitable. But marked progress is key. Delighted to have visited the GERD with President Isaías ”.
As Prime Minister Abiy pointed out, the project is nowhere near completion. The latest update from the Ethiopian Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy indicated that the GERD project is only at 76.3 percent.
President Isaias Afeworki’s latest visit to Ethiopia, which he completed Thursday morning, was the only one of his previous visit in which Abiy took him and his presidential delegate on a tour of military installations, including the Ethiopian Air Force and the restructured Defense Engineering facilities. .
The politicized Ethiopian raised his eyebrows on why Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had to invite the President of Eritrea to the military installations.
