The Outer Worlds was one of my favorite games of the past year. Not to be confused with The Outer Wilds, an equally fantastic but completely different game, The Outer Worlds felt like developer Obsidian going back to some of their most popular games and rekindling a fire within them. Many compared the space adventure to Fallout: New Vegas in space and to some extent, it is a valid point of comparison. The skill system, character writing, and combat felt like New Vegas running on an engine that wasn’t held together with tape and wood glue. The Outer Wilds has been available on consoles, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store for about a year now, but if you’ve been waiting for Steam’s launch before diving in, then you’re in luck.
The Outer Worlds launches on Steam on October 23 and brings with it that swashbuckling space adventure that we at Critical Hit love … for the most part. While The Outer Worlds’ presentation, writing, and characters are all of that typical Obsidian standard (that is, quite high), the game struggles to bear the weight of its own systems towards the later third of the game. The combat gets a little tedious, the perks decidedly boring, and the large-scale decisions a little over-written. Those flaws aside, though, The Outer Worlds has so much heart and spirit that you’ll want to see it through to its conclusion.
To quote Darryn’s review of the game, “Old at heart but young at heart, The Outer Worlds is a vibrant and surprising new chapter from Obsidian that duplicates what the studio does best and adds surprisingly fun gameplay on top of that. “So if your favoritism in PC stores and releases kept you from pulling the trigger on one of last year’s best games, now might be the time to jump into it. Oh, and the DLC, Peril on Gorgon, is over. to fall, so there is even more incentive to try.
