The Other Way Recap Season 2 Episode 19

I mentioned earlier this season that one of the highlights has been the introduction of parents to The other way universe. We already met Tim and Ariela’s mothers, but are they back in “Fight or Flight?” to make it very clear that they were right about everything. When Ariela’s mother went to meet Biniyam, she said that Ari would not like to be home alone late at night. He said Ari would be jealous. Janice meets her daughter. Cut to a few months later and Ari is checking Biniyam’s phone and terrorizing her sister until midnight.

Of course, I sympathize with Ari as a new mom, but you can’t say that none of this was a surprise. He went to the Biniyam club and saw him touch a woman’s butt like a pair of bongos. You have to trust your husband, even if you think he is stupid. Ari has a strange way of treating Biniyam like a child, but as for 90 day fiancé husbands go, he is fine. He got an apartment. He has a job. He supports his family. Ari sat across from her mother and said she supported Biniyam in her music career, and now she’s realizing that her mother was right – it’s not really fun dating a SoundCloud rapper and raising a child.

It also seems like Biniyam is just playing dumb to stop Ari from arguing with him. He knew he had to work the night his parents arrived, but he probably didn’t want to fight over something he couldn’t change. Ari still views their entire relationship as a battle, and it seems like he’s just trying to disconnect. Maybe he should have listened to Janice, because she was waving all these red flags months ago. I also think Ari is going to be surprised when his parents side with Biniyam more than he thought.

I thought Tim’s mother Robin was much more optimistic about their relationship when Tim left than Melyza’s parents when we met. But now that we know the truth behind Melyza and Robin’s relationship, it’s hard to see any love between Tim and Melyza. Melyza seems increasingly hypocritical and it is clear that they cannot move on with the past. Robin didn’t say anything about Tim and Melyza’s relationship that Melyza’s own parents didn’t say when they found out Tim had cheated – if this relationship doesn’t work out, they’d better move on. Of course, it was wrong for Robin to call the police, and it’s only fair that Melyza isn’t comfortable with them, but Robin didn’t seem to have a problem with that. In fact, he seemed to agree that it was for the best. The only real tension came from Robin expressing a sentiment almost all viewers agree with: Tim and Melyza need to break up.

They really almost fooled us into thinking that Brittany and Yazan were done, didn’t they? He was ready to give this episode five stars if Brittany had become attached to her absolutely narcissistic. Girls triphe focused on the breakup and had just cheated on Yazan. It was tough and maybe a bit sociopathic to abandon Yazan at the airport, but it seemed like it was enough to finally break the spell he had on Yazan. Surely this would be enough for him to understand that Brittany doesn’t care! Even Brittany’s friend showed more concern for Yazan after learning of his car accident. She asked him if he was okay and I realized that Brittany hadn’t even asked her.

Brittany may say that she loves Yazan and that she just raised her guard, but that doesn’t explain her lack of basic human decency. She calls Yazan mommy’s son, but he gave up his entire family to be with her. She is completely disconnected not only from Yazan’s reality, but from reality in general. I understand that Brittany is American and will do whatever she wants, but even her friend had the good sense to respect the religion and culture of another country. Brittany tries to make it sound like Yazan is controlling her when she mentions this, but she finally realized it was more than that. I also don’t think her friend liked being put in danger by Brittany’s sassy comments, and now she’s getting in a car with drunk and volatile Brittany and Yazan, who hates drunk Brittany. This train wreck is not particularly entertaining to watch.

Without Kenny and Armando around, Sumit, Jenny, Deavan, and Jihoon are tasked with proving that love still exists in 90 day fiancé: the other way this week. Sumit and Jenny are trapped in quarantine together, which is, of course, a dream for these absolutely disgusting lovebirds. I think all Jenny ever wanted was to be able to lock Sumit in a room with her. I’m concerned about Jenny’s safety in the pandemic, but it’s obvious that Sumit plans to keep her safe. I’m kinda happy they were together this time to be rude and in love before Sumit’s family messes everything up.

I’m happy that Deavan and Jihoon have each other during this difficult time. Jihoon may be childish, but it seems like he really took over after she suffered her miscarriage. It also felt very special that Jihoon’s mother took the time to support Deavan personally. Jihoon’s mother hasn’t been kind to Deavan at all, but I think she’s starting to accept their relationship. This loss has brought them all closer and that should help when Deavan’s mother returns next week. Elicia did not leave on good terms with Jihoon and her family. Jihoon’s parents have done a great job of allowing them space, but Elicia is still waiting for Jihoon to prove her worth. Sadly, I think Deavan will join his mother in the group instead of supporting her husband.

Sadly, “Fight or flight?” He didn’t convince me that love is real, but he did convince me that breaking up may be the right thing to do. However, Kenny and Armando are back next week so let’s not give up just yet.
